A black hole is a region of space-time where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light can escape. It bends the space-time path so badly that light even orbits a black hole.
Black holes aren’t material things. It is a region of space-time where the curvature is so extreme. And event horizon is not a physical thing. It is a region of space from which we cannot see and is cut off from the universe. So, a black hole is a collection of points in space and moments in time which are separated from the universe.
And black holes are not rigorous monster who grap things and swallow them up. If a black hole the mass of our sun were to put in our solar system, nothing would change except for the whole thing has gone dark. The real difference between stars and black holes happens when you are too close to a black hole. Thus, from a reasonable distance, a planet could orbit a black hole.
Also, many people believed that there is a singularity at the centre of the black hole, compacting all the matter into infinite density. Well, that is not true. Indeed, the matter inside the black hole is compacted into a tiny space. But it is not of zero size! Remember singularity is a mathematical entity, it is not a physical thing. If a singularity just popped up in an equation, it means that the equation has failed and needs to be replaced by other accurate, correct equation.
We all know that general relativity perfectly works for almost all small, big and enormous things in the universe. But it fails at the quantum scale and needs to be replaced by quantum theory of gravity. But we don’t have one yet, so we won’t know about the centre of a black hole anytime soon.
