We all have heard that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. But have you ever wondered why?
Here is the explanation. We are constantly moving through spacetime at a constant speed, the speed of light i.e. 299,792,458 m/s. But spacetime consists of two things- space and time. So the more you travel through space, the less you travel through time. Yes. We are time travellers but only in forward direction. As you travel through space approaching the speed of light, you will travel less and less through time. And when you travel through space at the speed of light, you will stop travelling through time or time would stop for you.
The inverse is also true. When you are stationary i.e. not traveling through space, you are travelling through time at the maximum speed, the speed of light. But the effect of time slowing down as you travel faster and faster in space is large enough to notice when you reach speed of about 70% the speed of light. Below that speed, the effect is almost negligible. I have a blog on ‘What happens as you approach the speed of light?, so check this out for better understanding.

To help understand better, let us take an analogy, suppose you are going for a walk and you are travelling at a constant, say 10km/hr, no more or less. And the lane which you are going for a walk has two lanes, one in the east direction and the other in the north direction. You travel in the east lane which means that you travel towards east at 10km/hr and 0 km/hr in the north. And if you travel in the north direction, you are travelling 10 km/hr in the north and 0 km/hr in the east. If you travel in the north east direction, you are travelling both of them at some speed, say x km/hr in the east and y km/hr in the north such that (x+y) km/hr = 10 km/hr. This is exactly what happens to spacetime when you are moving, running, walking, riding, etc.
Perhaps, my analogy is imperfect but I hope you get the core idea – we are always moving through spacetime at a constant speed, the speed of light. And the reason why we can’t travel faster than the speed of light is that we are already travelling at the speed of light through spacetime all the time, no more or less. We can’t travel faster or slower than the speed of light through spacetime. So the more you travel through space, the less you travel through time and vice-versa.
And up to this day, nobody knows why we are always travelling through spacetime at one and only speed, the speed of light. Maybe, cracking this mystery will make us travel faster than the speed of light or travel through time.
