Quarks and leptons may have many similarities like they are part of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Also, they are one of the most elementary particles. But they have a big difference. There can be a free isolated leptons like electron but there can’t be an isolated, free quark.
Imagine this, there is no such thing as proton. Proton is just a group of two up quarks and one down quark bounded together by gluon, the particle carrying the strong nuclear force.
Taking a quark outside a proton is impossible as it ends up creating more quarks. Don’t get frustrated!!! I will explain. Remember the strong nuclear force is like a rubber band. When two quarks stay close together, they experience no force. But as they move apart from each other, the force becomes stronger exponentially. At a certain point, the force will be overcomed and the quark will be knocked off. But, something weird and bizarre happens.
With the energy we used to seperate them, they create new quarks and the proton still remains as a proton with three quarks. There is no proton having only one or two quarks. And a quark can never be alone. Recall, when we try to seperate a quark from the group of three quarks in protons or neutrons, more new quarks will be formed and they will be form triplets forming protons or neutrons or just a group of them.
The only place when a quark can alone is maybe at the core of neutron star or at the Big Bang. Unlike electrons, there cannot be a single, isolated quark.
